Yellowstone Bison BILLINGS, MT - You can almost be sure to see bison now if you head to Yellowstone. The National Park's bison herd has bounced back to near-record levels following the slaughter of more than 1,000 bison two winters ago. Park administrators estimate 4,700 bison now roam the park - up from 3,600 last year. It is currently the largest herd in the world. During the winter of 2005-2006, more than 1,000 bison migrating outside the park were killed to prevent the spread of bucellosis. Following a public outcry, only two bison were killed last winter. State and federal officials instead concentrated on hazing migrant animals back in the park. Whether the same dilemma will be faced this year remains to be seen. |
